A cover is a small roof
Posts, a ledger, and a roof usually mean drawings and a permit. Confirm the current Poway rule for your sketch.

Do not copy another city's small cover exemption
Some cities exempt very small open covers. Poway is not those cities. Bring the span and the attachment to Development Services rather than assuming a neighbor's project was the rule.
Water and the wildland edge
The roof of the cover has to drain somewhere that is not a bedroom wall or the lot next door.
If the house backs to open space, ask whether the fire authority cares about the cover. This guide will not guess your zone.
